Riding Friends, Join us for the Virginia Horse Council's annual conference, which will feature a keynote speaker Robin Traywick Williams <http://www.robintraywickwilliams.com/> , former chair of the Virginia Racing Commission and president of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation <http://www.trfinc.org/> . Robin's talk is entitled "How Fooling with Racehorses Landed me in Prison" so the morning promises to get off to a fun start! Her talk will set the pace for 12 sessions on topics ranging from equine dentistry, sports massage (with hands on demos), equine liability issues, insurance for equine operations, forming non-profits and the responsibilities of members. There will also be a special youth track "A Day at the Races" that will have hands on programs about the racing industry (including health, nutrition, training, betting, handicapping, drug testing, etc.) I know that one sounds like a lot of fun for adults too but the age range is 9-18 years old. For the trails track we have representatives coming from the State Parks, State Forests, Game Department, National Forest, & National Parks for a panel presentation, where we explore ways to both increase and strengthen partnerships with these agencies by learning more about the constraints they face when we ask them to do more for us relative to trails and camps. They will also talk about ongoing and upcoming projects that relate to multi-use trails. A moderated panel discussion will be followed by an open question and answer session so the audience can ask questions that pertain to specific facilities or concerns. For the entire afternoon session I'm bringing in Woody Keen from NC. Woody is a national trail building expert and owns a company, Trails Dynamics <http://traildynamics.homestead.com/> . He has been the president of the National Trailbuilders Association since 2006. Check out his website to see some examples of the fabulous trails (and bridges) he has worked on. This mini workshop will cover the basics of good design and development of sustainable trails that withstand the erosion effects of water but also mitigate the user impacts of horses on trail tread. Topics will include: -Trail design 101 -Controlling water -Understanding user impacts -Shared use vs. single use- trails pros and cons -Management strategies for successful trail systems I felt that this workshop would be especially worthwhile this year because of the damage many trails have sustained from folks riding while they are wet. Also, there are many new trail opportunities with the parks and state forests on the horizon and we really need to get up to speed on good trail building techniques so that we can have an educated voice during the planning phase, and knowledgeable volunteers on the crews. Sally Aungier Free Equine Law Seminar at Tri-County Feeds, Etc. in Marshall, VA on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Virginia equine attorney, Bruce R. Smith, will offer a free one hour seminar entitled Legal Issues Affecting Horse and Farm Owners Among the topics to be discussed are: -- Landowners' legal duties; -- Liability prevention; -- Preventing and respond to trespassing; -- Boarding and lease arrangements; -- LLC's and other equine business forms; -- Tax law changes; and -- Zoning and environmental issues affecting farm owners. Mr. Smith will discuss the topics that are particularly relevant to farm owners. He explained that, "I find that many horse owners and farm owners worry about liability issues but they do not understand what they should be doing to address those issues and protect themselves. Since the economy is really tough right now many people are trying to get income from boarding arrangements and pasture leases. There are specific things people can do to ensure that they will get paid and to reduce the risk of expensive legal problems down the road." Attendees will have an opportunity to have their questions answered by an experienced attorney. Mr. Smith is a popular speaker and has been a presenter at various horse conferences including Equine Extravaganza and the National Equine Law Conference. At this year's National Equine Law Conference in Lexington, Kentucky in late April he will be presenting on Fraud in Equine Sale Transactions. Mr. Smith has his own law practice located in Fairfax County. He is a horse owner himself and for over fifteen years he has represented horse farms, breeders, riders and trainers in racing, showing and a variety of other equine pursuits. Mr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law and is a former partner in the Lexington, Kentucky office of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, LLP. He is licensed in Virginia and Kentucky. Battlefield Equestrian Society Crystal Crown Series Judged Pleasure Ride Sunday, April 25th, 2010 General Information on Ride This is the first ride in the 2010 Crystal Crown Ride series. The BES gives thanks to those of you who choose our ride, year after year, and to those are joining us for the first time… we are sure that you will not be disappointed. We welcome each of you and look forward to a spectacular ride season. This ride will be held within the Manassas National Battlefield Park and will be approximately 10 miles long, over gently rolling terrain to include creek crossings and on clearly marked trails. Most of the trails do not require your horse to wear shoes although there are a few sections that are comprised of gravel… therefore, the decision to have shoes is at riders discretion. Ample trailer parking is available. You may choose to bring your own water or there is an onsite water tank. Portable rest room facilities are available. Due to the anticipated size of this ride, the ride will begin promptly at 8:30 am, with registration opening at 7:45 am. Start times will be assigned and you will be notified of said time via e-mail no less than 3 days prior to the event. It is critical that you check in with Registration the day of the ride and you and your horse are at the Start Line at your assigned ride time. If you are not present when called out by the Start Line volunteer, you will be fit in as time allows. All riders are encouraged to wear an approved safety helmet. Junior riders (17 and under) must be accompanied by an adult and must wear an approved safety helmet. Due to liability, BES does not allow non-registered friends/riders to “ride along”, participate at any obstacle or park their trailer at the event site. Additionally, BES does not allow horses in training to be “ponied” during this event. For the safety of the horses, riders and volunteers, please leave your dogs at home. Note Regarding Colored Ribbons in Your Horses’ Tail The decision to place a colored ribbon in your horses’ tail should be done in a manner which is fair and safe to all other participants and volunteers. A green ribbon signifies an “inexperienced” horse. Horses known to kick should have a red ribbon in their tail. If you wish to ride a stallion, yellow ribbon, this will be handled on a case-by-case basis and you should contact Marlys Shoup prior to sending in your Application. Treatment of Judges, Ground Volunteers and/or Your Horse Riders are hereby notified that any act of unsportsmanlike conduct, whether verbal or physical disrespect to judges or event volunteers will result in loss of points on the particular obstacle and/or shall be grounds for immediate disqualification. Additionally, any abuse to your horse, at the staging area or at any time during this event shall be grounds for immediate disqualification. If disqualification occurs, the rider shall forfeit all entry fees and prizes. No exceptions will be made. Registration/Cost Current BES Members=$40 Non BES Members=$45 Daily Park Pass=$3 (required unless you have a yearly pass) Additional Lunches=$6 (for your non-riding guests) All riders must pre-register. Entries must be received no later than Friday, April 16, 2010. Any entry received after this date is on a space available basis and will be assessed a $15 late registration fee. If you are riding with a group, whenever possible, please submit all applications in one envelope (otherwise, your group may not be assigned ride times together or in the time slot you desire). Scoring/Awards Ribbons will be given for Horse Breed, Rider Age, Novice Horse and Novice Rider (if applicable). Breed categories are established when any there are 6 or more horses of any particular registered breed (i.e., 6 QH’s, 6 Apps, etc.). If your registered horse does not meet the 6 minimum criteria, said horse will be placed in Other Registered or Other Registered Gaited. For riders who send in their application without breed papers, their horse will be placed in the Grade category. Auction papers are not proof of breed. Rider Age groups will be grouped based on rider entries and will be determined by the BES. In order to qualify for either Novice Horse or Novice Rider, you and/or your horse must not have placed in a previous Judged Pleasure Ride. All scores will be tabulated after the event. As many people travel a long distance to attend our rides and the number of entries, we no longer have the onsite Awards ceremonies. All ribbons/awards will be mailed within 2 weeks of the event. Ribbons are awarded for those placing 1st thru 6th (if applicable) in each Age, Breed and Novice category. Additionally, Grand Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons and prizes will be awarded. Rider scores will be sent via email and posted on the BES website. If you wish to keep your score along the way, score cards and pens will be available for you at the Registration Table. Crystal Crown Year End Awards Year end awards will be awarded to the Top 20 participants in the Crystal Crown Series. To qualify for Overall year-end awards the same horse/ride combination must compete in at least four of the five Crystal Crown rides. The top four scores of the horse/rider combination will be used to determine Overall year end placement. Hunter's Rest and Journeyman Farm in Pitts Grove, NJ are combining to offer a UNIQUE, one-of-a-kind riding camp experience this spring. The Island State Beach Park is on Long Beach Island on Jersey's eastern shore. It's about 1 1/2 hours due east of Philadelphia (an hour east of Journeyman). Island Beach is a preserved barrier island that protects a number of natural soreline and habitats. There are 10 miles of sandy beach, an extensive shoreline along Barnegat Bay, dense maritime forests, rolling sand dunes and tidal marshes. Island Beach is home to foxes, ospreys, eagles and more. Horses are allowed on the beaches from October through April. There are no special fees - just the $5 per vehicle entrance fee. The numbers are limited to 10 horses - so we'd pretty much have OUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH!! We'll offer lots of other riding (Journeyman has an indoor arena, outdoor jumping arena, trails around the farm, plus the Parvin State Park is nearby for more trail riding opportunities. Top quality instruction, fun activities, snug lodging, great food, lots and lots of fun. And RIDING ON THE BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two choices -- 1. Advanced Teen Spring Break Camp: I've looked into when most schools have spring break, and most are the week prior to Easter this year -- March 26-April 5. The Virginia group is limited by *my* schedule -- the Old Dominion Hounds Point to Point and hunter pace are April 3 and 4 this year (Easter is April 4) so I want to be home on that Friday night so we don't miss the races. Therefore, a proposed schedule might look like this: Depart Hunter's Rest Monday morning, March 29. Drive to Journeyman (about 4 hours.) Get the horses settled in time for lunch. Lunch at the farm, with afternoon ride and dinner party with the NJ students at the farm. Tuesday: Breakfast then morning lesson in the indoor (dressage and flatwork exercises.) Lunch and afternoon unmounted practical session. Join the NJ riders for afternoon trail ride then everyone pitches in to pack for our beach day on Wednesday. Wednesday, Depart for Island Beach after an early breakfast. Ride on the beach, picnic lunch, late departure for home with a stop at a famous roadside diner for early supper. Thursday: Breakfast then morning lesson in the indoor (gridwork). Lunch then afternoon trail ride at Parvin State Park. Dinner at the farm. Friday: Early departure for Virginia -- home by lunchtime. Cost: Final cost has not been set yet, but based on each student bringing food to share (to keep costs down) it will be approximately $300 plus food to share (self-treat lunches on our drive up and back.) Includes the drive up and back for you and 'your' Hunter's Rest horse. Meals (except where noted.) Instruction. Lodging. Entertainment. Let me know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are interested, as this is LIMITED TO THE FIRST FOUR RIDERS WHO SIGN UP. (Journeyman has extra horses but I can only take 4 people -- plus me -- in my truck.) Deposit holds your slot. 2. Adult April Camp: Choose any 4 or 5 day period in April to do a similar trip as described above. Weekdays or weekends, or combination of both. Pricing will be similar. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. The event is widely regarded for presenting a premier collection of work from highly acclaimed contemporary sporting artists. This year’s roster includes Beverly Wende, Juli Kirk, Nancy Pellatt, Larry Wheeler, Richard Hubbard, Peggy Kauffman, Linda Luster, Beth Carlson, sculptor J. Clayton Bright, wrought iron artist Eric Zanotti, and others – all with exciting new works shown for the first time. The 2008 exhibition poster features American Hounds by Julie Kirk (see below and attached). It is available for $15.00 and can be purchased at the event or through www.mhhna.org or by calling 703-777-2414. Proceeds from the posters, and a portion of the art sale proceeds, go to benefit the Museum’s efforts to preserve the art and artifacts of mounted hunting in North America . “We are thrilled to be back at beautiful, historic Morven Park,” says Elizabeth Beer of the Beresford Gallery. “It’s the perfect setting to showcase our legacy of fine sporting art to the public. We have several outstanding pieces to present and we’re proud to support the Museum of Hounds and Hunting through our success.” Marion Maggiolo, chairman of the MHHNA, echoes Ms. Beer’s sentiments: “The Museum’s collection includes pieces from the early 18th century, as well as works by some of the most notable sporting artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. To see this rich tradition continued by the talented contributors to this display of contemporary art is truly inspiring.” |
